In English the word « sway » means something floating, balancing, shaking or unstable; at the same time the word refers to the notion of control, power and persuasion. These two almost contradictory meanings prompted the idea of elaborating a show that would include art pieces corresponding to one and/or the other of these definitions. The show presents ten artists from Belgium, Korea, France, Poland, United Kingdom, Russia and Switzerland. Several artistic techniques are involved: drawings, photographs, sculpture, installations and videos. The artworks presented in SWAY make us aware of the duality of visions that we can have on the world, on objects and on human sensations.

Curators : Stephane Sauzedde, Nicolas Thely.

« BASSE DEF » is a thematic exhibition which follows « BASSE DEF – preview » a selection of videos taken from YOU TUBE sites for the « Web suppliment » of the « Liberation » newspaper, visible on line at www.ecrans.fr

It has never been so easy to create images, videos or sketches, and modify and share them. Wallpapers, blogs, webzines, animated Gifs, mobile phone photo albums, fan compiled playlists etc… the sources of low definition images are numerous and to be found everywhere.
Growing up with this ecosystem, a whole generation of artists use the dirty side of modern technology to escape the banality of the glossy image as much as the « Job well done » idea of the seasoned professional. All this may be « Low def » but it is also of great beauty.

The « BASSE DEF » exhibition, with its literal and down to earth title deliberately under sells itself. Like the group of artists it promotes, it aims above all to bring into the limelight the huge energy generated by the users and abusers of today’s technology. To achieve this, the show gathers together the recent bathroom shower jet photos of Clode Coulpier, the posters of Fabrice Croux inspired by My Space sites, the ghost like images of Serge Comte, the wallpaper like oil paintings of David Lefebvre etc. etc…

Fundamentally, the assembled artists are gamblers. Like Camille Laurelli with her origami pieces they know anyone could do it. This surely makes them chuckle somewhat. In this sense they take up the colours of Filliou, de Maciunas and other Fluxus artists. This said, they also like to show their class, even if they refuse to put into evidence their mastery of the diverse tools they may use, the quality of the end result is of the utmost importance. Above all it must be explosive and original. In this way they are definitely post- punk, post rock, or post techno, depending on who or what piece we happen to be contemplating at the time. In any case, practically all the artists present have an approach similar to that of the musician, endlessly searching for the ideal support ( paper, CD, video, website, public performance, objects etc.) for their work.
From the home – the bedroom, the office, the computer – low definition image spreads out in all directions, contaminating all means of expression. The BASSE DEF exhibition aims to confront the public with this fact. Not to present one more time, the glossy surface that is Pop Art, but to scratch the surface, get beneath the skin to the very bone and evaluate the derisory persuit that is the work of production, figure out what we can do with these images beyond their consomation.
